Trial stage
Where a compound sits in the human development pipeline is recorded as Preclinical, Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3+. We pull the current stage from ClinicalTrials.gov and the EU Clinical Trials Register on access date and re-verify quarterly.
Regulatory status
We state the FDA posture plainly, approved for indication X, or labeled for research use only, or removed from the 503A list, or investigational under a specific IND. Regulatory status changes; every post carries a review date.
Where we're uncertain
Every compound profile closes with a named uncertainty section, the question we can't answer from the current literature, the trial we'd want to see, the effect size we'd treat as a real signal. Uncertainty is not a failure mode here; it's load-bearing.

Are collagen peptides and collagen the same thing?
They are the same protein at different stages of processing. Collagen peptides, also called hydrolyzed collagen, are collagen that has been enzymatically cut into short, absorbable fragments. Plain collagen and gelatin are the same molecule before that cut. The difference that matters is fragment size, because only the small hydrolyzed peptides are absorbed and detected in the blood in meaningful amounts.
Which is better, collagen peptides or regular collagen?
For skin and general joint goals, hydrolyzed collagen peptides are the better-supported choice, because almost every trial reporting a benefit used the peptide form and because peptides are absorbed while whole collagen and gelatin are digested like ordinary protein. The exception is undenatured type II collagen, a separate low-dose product studied specifically for joint symptoms through a different mechanism.
Is gelatin as good as collagen peptides?
Gelatin is the same protein and supplies the same amino acids, but it is not the form used in the supplement trials and is not absorbed as intact collagen-specific peptides. It also gels and will not dissolve cleanly into a cold drink. As a whole food it is fine; as a substitute for the researched peptide dose it is not equivalent.
What is undenatured type II collagen and how is it different?
Undenatured type II collagen, often labeled UC-II, is intact collagen taken at tiny milligram doses rather than grams. Instead of supplying building blocks, its proposed mechanism is an immune-tolerance effect in the joint. It was studied for knee osteoarthritis by Crowley in 2009 and Lugo in 2016, and it is not interchangeable with the gram-level hydrolyzed powders used for skin and general joint support.
Does marine or bovine collagen change whether it is peptides?
No. Marine and bovine describe the animal source, fish skin versus cattle hide, not the processing. Both are usually sold as hydrolyzed collagen peptides. The source affects amino acid profile and price slightly, but whether a product is the absorbable peptide form depends on the word hydrolyzed, not on the animal.
What would change our reading

A new Phase 2 trial for any of the ranked compounds. A regulatory action changing FDA status. A published replication failure in an independent lab. Any of those would move entries on this list within a week, with a dated note on what changed.
