What does hydrolyzed collagen mean?
Hydrolysis enzymatically cleaves the large triple-helix collagen molecule into short, low-molecular-weight peptides (typically 2 to 5 kilodaltons). These peptides are water-soluble and absorbed in the gut, unlike native collagen. Collagen peptides and hydrolyzed collagen are the same thing, and all the major human trials used this form.
Is hydrolyzed collagen the same as gelatin?
No, but they are related. Gelatin is partially hydrolyzed collagen that gels on cooling. Hydrolyzed collagen is broken down further, does not gel, and dissolves in cold liquid. The skin and joint endpoint trials used the hydrolyzed form, not gelatin.
Is hydrolyzed collagen actually absorbed?
Yes, this is well established. Studies have shown collagen-specific peptides such as prolyl-hydroxyproline are measurable in blood after oral intake. The open question is not absorption but whether those circulating peptides causally drive the reported skin and joint endpoints.
What dose of hydrolyzed collagen did the trials use?
Roughly 2.5 to 15 g per day depending on the endpoint. Skin trials often used 2.5 to 10 g of specific peptide preparations, joint trials around 10 g, and the bone trial 5 g. We compare which powders deliver those doses in our best collagen powder guide.
